National Nutrition Month

Food is medicine, so choose wisely!

March has come into full swing with National Nutrition Month! When we hear or talk about nutrition, we can usually understand the central premise of the idea: Eating healthy – using food options that will promote a well-balanced lifestyle and prevent obesity, high cholesterol, and other preventable health issues.

Good nutrition is not about cutting calories or losing weight; it’s about giving your body the nutrients it needs when it needs them. Food is not just a source of pleasure but also a form of medicine. The adage, “You are what you eat”, is more relevant than ever. Eating healthy is not just about weight loss; it’s about being healthy and feeling your best daily.

The key is to make healthy eating a habit. Here are some tips on how to eat healthy every day:

Probiotics Play a Crucial Role in Nutrient Absorption

A healthy digestive system is critical for superior health!

The bioavailability of our food is the most critical factor in whether your body will easily absorb its nutrients. Just because you eat healthy foods does not always mean you are getting all its value and adequate nutrition. Furthermore, in a world where food has become so enriched and over-processed, getting all the daily vitamins and minerals your body needs to stay happy and healthy is becoming more complex. Food processing determines bioavailability, the interactions of compounds, and even the individual’s physical makeup.

Unfortunately, due to the SAD (Standard American Diet), many of us eat processed foods that are filled with chemicals, simple sugars, and carbohydrates. These foods cause the intestines to become coated with layers of undigested matter. This affects our body’s ability to absorb proper nutrients.

A Bakers Dozen – Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics® Probiotic Strains

A Monthly Breakdown of Each Starter Strain Selected
for Fermentation in Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics

By Ross Pelton, RPh, CCN, PhD
Scientific Director for Essential Formulas

Dr. Ohhira was a visionary microbiologist who was decades ahead of his time. He recognized that in the human gastrointestinal tract and throughout nature, one of the primary functions of bacteria is to ferment/digest organic matter, which produces compounds that play critical roles in regulating health. Dr. Ohhira originally called these metabolites biogenic compounds. Today, they are more commonly referred to as Postbiotic Metabolites.

Dr. Ohhira carefully selected unique strains of probiotic bacteria to be the starter strains used in the multi-year fermentation process to produce Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotics. These strains of bacteria have substantially different DNA, which enables them to ferment other compounds in the food you eat (primarily dietary fibers and polyphenols). The net result is that different strains of bacteria can produce various kinds of postbiotic metabolites, which have a wide range of health benefits.

This month, we will highlight the third probiotic strain, Bifidobacterium longum BB536.
