Be Kind, It's Good for Your Heart!!

Could kindness be a magic elixir that makes us happier -- and healthier?

Research suggests acts of kindness like donating money, volunteering, and mentoring can boost the giver's emotional health, but science also studies how altruism improves physical health. Some research studies link kindness with the release of neurotransmitters and hormones that contribute to mood and well-being.

Waguih William IsHak, professor and clinical chief of psychiatry at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, said the hormone oxytocin, in particular, benefits overall wellness because of its anti-inflammatory, pro-immunity, and anti-stress effects.

Why Omega-3 is Essential for Cardiovascular Health

By Ross Pelton, RPh, CCN, PhD
Scientific Director for Essential Formulas

Many people are confused about fats because dietary fat is often associated with being overweight or obese. Consequently, many people strive to consume a low-fat diet. In this article, I will emphasize how vital some fats are for good health.

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are nutrients that our bodies cannot make. Consequently, we must obtain them from our diet or nutritional supplements. These two essential fats get converted into other fatty acids that are a critical part of cell membranes throughout the body. They also regulate neurological development, vision, blood clotting, cholesterol levels, inflammation, and immune function.

It has been reported that low levels of omega-3 are as dangerous as smoking in the risk of death. Results from an 11-year-long study revealed that smokers who consumed omega-3 supplements had the same rate of death from heart disease as non-smokers who did not supplement with omega-3. This is a powerful statement regarding the protective effects of omega-3.

What Is Glutathione and How is it Linked to Heart Health?

Glutathione is a very simple molecule that is produced naturally in your body. It is a combination of three simple building blocks of protein or amino acids -- cysteine, glycine, and glutamine. Glutathione is a vital antioxidant, probably the most important because it is produced in every cell of your body all the time. It protects our cells from oxidative stress; however, when we get overwhelmed, so does its production. It is imperative because as you age and have disease come into your life, your glutathione levels deplete.

As science has proven, heart disease is a cause of inflammation as a result of oxidative stress on our bodies. Some significant oxidative stressors are:

  1. Poor nutrition (Increased simple carbohydrates and increased blood sugar)
  2. Smoking and pollution
  3. Lack of Sleep
  4. Stress (anxiety, depression, & anger)
  5. Being Overweight
  6. Lack of Activity

Deeply Concerning Heart Health Trends Predict Why Preventative Care is Critical

  • ❤  Midlife and younger adults are dying of heart disease more often. Death rates from heart disease rose 8.5 percent for adults aged 45 to 64 between 2010 and 2020, says research for Kaiser Permanente.
  • ❤  A record number of older adults are perishing, too. Heart disease-related deaths among 65+ Americans rose from 475,097 in 2011 to 556,665 in 2020. Interestingly, the heart-disease death rate fell over those years; however, the significant growth in America's older population means a rise in total deaths.
  • ❤  The COVID pandemic injected rocket fuel into the heart disease resurgence. In 2020 and 2021, heart attack deaths increased by up to 21 percent for those 45 to 64 and 17.9 percent for people 65 and older, according to a Cedars-Sinai Medical Center study. This might be a side effect of the pandemic's legacy of weight gain, inactivity, and stress. But the virus itself may be playing a direct role. A large 2020 study found lingering heart risks a year after COVID infection.

There has never been a better and more crucial time to take control of your health with lifestyle changes, diet, supplementation and regular checks-ups!
