Food as Medicine:

Ditch the Diet and Focus on Intuitive Eating

March has come into full swing with National Nutrition Month! When we hear or talk about nutrition, we can usually understand the central premise of the idea: Eating healthy -- using food options that will promote a well-balanced lifestyle and prevent the likes of obesity, high cholesterol, and other preventable health issues.

Good nutrition is not about cutting calories or losing weight; it's about giving your body the nutrients it needs when it needs them.

Our society has strayed away from eating intuitively.

We live in a fast-paced environment that demands long hours and values efficiency over health and wellbeing. We glorify 'hustle,' workaholics, and long hours of overtime. Remembering Dr. Iichiroh Ohhira
A Visionary Scientist/Microbiologist
1936-2016

Iichiroh Ohhira was born in 1936 in Osaka, Japan. Like many Japanese, he grew up in a family that adhered to Buddhism, and, as a young man, he was ordained as a Buddhist monk.

He attended Okayama University in southern Japan and graduated in 1973 with a Master’s degree in agriculture. He continued his advanced studies, and in 1980, he received his Doctorate in Natural Science and Technology from Okayama University.

After graduating, Ohhira embarked on a career as a landscape architect. Buddhism is a religion that emphasizes that humans should live in harmony with nature. Iichiroh Ohhira had a deep love of nature, and over time, he developed an international reputation for his architectural designs that creatively incorporated and expressed the natural beauty of nature. His designs often contained walking paths, water features, and benches where people could meditate and enjoy the peacefulness of nature.

Probiotic Bacteria: Source of Essential Nutrients

The term Essential Nutrients refers to nutrients that are required for normal functioning and, they are also nutrients humans are not capable of making. For decades, scientists assumed that the only way humans could obtain our essential nutrients was from the foods we eat or by taking nutritional supplements. However, scientists have recently learned that some of our critical essential nutrients are produced in the gastrointestinal tract by various strains of probiotic bacteria.

Scientists are discovering that probiotic bacteria are amazingly complex little chemical manufacturing factories. When probiotic bacteria ferment dietary fibers, they create compounds that are referred to as postbiotic metabolites. Scientists have recently confirmed that a number of the postbiotic metabolites that our probiotic bacteria make are some of our important essential nutrients.
